Last Second Chances Fall Short Against CCCB
Ankeny, IA -- The Eagles gave themselves several opportunities to tie the game in the final seconds, but could not convert in Friday's MCCC clash.
In their second head-to-head of the season against CCCB, the Eagles saw an eerily similar finish as the game was determined in the final possessions.
The opposing Saints found their scoring groove first, leading by as many as 17 points in the first half. Faith distributed well early, as six different players scored the first six baskets of the day. Trailing 30-13 at the midway point of the half, Asa LaFleur scored 8 straight points, complimented by a 3 from Connor Parrish to jumpstart the team's comeback. The Eagles brought the score within 2 points several times, until a last second jumper gave the Saints a three point advantage at the half, leading 45-42.
The teams played a perfectly even second half, scoring 40 points apiece. A steal from Quensy Ferguson and a fastbreak layup from Logan Fincham gave the Eagles their first lead of the half, and Mason Gorsh and Ferguson scored a quick five points to build on that lead. In the final ten minutes, the game saw four ties as both teams battled. The Eagles entered the final 60 seconds trailing 84-80, but a made layup from LaFleur cut the deficit to 2 with plenty of time to go. The Saints headed to the free throw line, only converting on one to extend the lead to 85-82 with 30 seconds left. Over the next 30 seconds Faith had three opportunities to score, as the Saints missed two more free throws and turned the ball over in their final possession, but the Eagles ultimately could not convert and CCCB walked out with the three point victory.
Five Eagles scored double-digits on Friday, as Asa LaFleur led the way with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Cade Cooper added 10 points on a perfect 5-5 from the field, and Quensy Ferguson did a little bit of everything with 13 points, 12 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals.
