Talton's Three Lifts Eagle's to Victory
The Eagle men did something many teams don't get the opportunity to do, as they ended their season in exciting fashion with a buzzer beating three by Jon Luke Talton to give the Eagles the victory. Talton's three gave the Eagles a 93-90 victory over Baptist Bible College, (Mo.), and gave them their 17th victory on the season. Faith finishes with a final record of 17-12, and a 7th place finish in the upper division of the ACCA National Tournament.
The game was a back and forth affair from start to finish, with neither team able to grab control of the game, and both teams struggling to stop the other team from scoring. The first half featured nine lead changes and three ties, with the visiting Patriots able to hold a four point 46-42 halftime lead.
The second half was a mirror of the first, with neither team able to take control. The Eagles looked like they would be the team to do that, opening their largest lead of the game at 81-73 with our minutes left in the game. BBC had other ideas though, as an old fashined three point play, followed by back to back three point shots erased the Eagles lead, putting them down one with three to play. The Patriots extended the lead to three with two minutes remaining, but on the ensuing possession, Aaron Leistikow hit a huge three to tie things up at 88 apiece. A foul by the Eagles put BBC at the line for a one and one. BBC came up short, and the Eagles were able to secure the rebound and find John Acree inside on the ensuing possession to take a two point lead. Faith was forced to foul on their next defensive possession, as BBC was able to get to the basket with 13 seconds to play. BBC knocked down both pressure free throws to tie things up, and the Eagles pushed the ball to half court and called timeout with 13 seconds remaining. Out of the timeout, BBC was able to force some time off the clock with a couple fouls, leaving five seconds on the clock, and another timeout called by the Eagles. The Eagles came out of the timeout with the ball on the sideline. Jon Luke Talton inbounded the ball to Jordan Marshall an both men did an excellent job of reading the defenisve trap coming. Talton faded to the corner and Marshall found him wide open for a three at the buzzer to give the Eagles the win. "Jordan and Luke did a great job. We had something drawn up, but BBC took our vision away, and Jordan and Luke just took what the defense gave us. Luke knocked it down, all credit to those two men for the play," noted coach Fincham.
John Acree finished off a phenomenal tournament, scoring 21 points while leading the team in rebounds with six. Cody Chaffin also scored 21 points, while handing out nine assists and grabbing three steals. Aaron Leistikow finished with 17 points, while Timothy O'Tool finished with 13.
The Eagles will close out their season at the annual Winter Sports Awards Fellowship on Tuesday, March 18, at 6:00 PM in the Nettleton Center classrooms 103-105. The Athletic Department invites all friends, family, and fans to attend.
