Men's Streak Ended by CCCB
The Eagle men lost a hard fought road contest Friday night to Central Christian College of the Bible. The loss drops the Eagles to 10-7 overall, and 3-2 in the conference.
The first half was a back and forth affair, with neither team able to gain more than a six point advantage. The Eagles were able to play well offensively, only recording four turnovers in the half, but were unable to keep CCCB off the offensive glass, as well as come up with consistent offensive possessions. The result was a three point deficit for Faith at the half.
CCCB quickly built the lead to seven out of the gates in the second half, but Faith began to lock down defensively. Trailing 32-39, the Eagles put together a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to take a six point lead. The Eagles maintained that lead for the next ten minutes, leading by 10, 68-58, with five minutes left in the game. The Eagles looked in control, but CCCB's Victor Dean changed everything in a matter of two minutes.
Dean scored on the ensuing possession, the Eagles missed their next shot, and Dean scored on an and one to cut the lead to five. Faith then turned the ball over and CCCB scored to pull within three. Another Faith turnover led to another Dean and one, and after converting the free throw, the game was knotted up at 68 apiece, as CCCB put together a 10-0 run in less than two minutes. Both teams turned the ball over on their next possessions, but Faith couldn't take advantage, missing close shots and put backs on the offensive rebounds. Faith was finally able to convert one of two free throws to take a one point lead with two minutes to play, but CCCB knocked down a three on the ensuing possession to lead by two. Faith scored on their next possession, and forced a tough shot on the defensive end, but failed to grab the rebound, as Dean secured another offensive rebound and scored on the put back to give CCCB the lead for good. A series of unforced errors by the Eagles over the final minute kept the Eagles from having any chance of tying the game up, and CCCB sealed the game at the free throw line, 79-72. "I didn't have us prepared to finish the game over the last five minutes, and that's my fault," noted coach Fincham, "that's something we've got to get better at doing, especially with the conference and regional tournaments coming up. We'll definitely be focusing on that in practice for the remainder of the season."
The Eagles struggled offensively but had a balanced attack. Aaron Leistikow scored 16 points, Jon Luke Talton had 15, Cody Chaffin had 14, and Timothy O'Tool scored 11. No Eagle finished with more than eigth rebounds as they were hammered on the glass for the first time all season. The Saints outrebounded the Eagles 46-31, and recorded 16 offensive rebounds, which they converted into 23 second chance points. CCCB was also able to score 20 points off the Eagles 14 turnovers, 10 of which came in the second half.
The Eagles will continue their road trip on Saturday, when they will travel to St. Louis Christian College for a 2:00 PM conference tip off.
