Fritz Scores Game-Winning Goal on Senior Night
ANKENY, Iowa—On a day when the Faith Eagles honored its seniors, it seemed only appropriate that one of them would connect for the game-winning shot against the defending national champions. In the end, a defensive battle was won on a shot by senior defender Karina Fritz, whose shot at the 79-minute mark was the difference in the 1-0 victory over rival Maranatha Baptist University.
A gorgeous and sunny fall afternoon ended happily for the Faith Eagles who ended a three-game losing streak with an important regional win, which should help the team regain some confidence moving into the last month of the season. Faith improved to 2-3-1 with the win. Karina Fritz and Lydia Trygstad were honored before the game as this year's seniors. They have helped take Eagles soccer to new heights during their four-year run.
The Eagles struggled to finish on offensive possessions, especially in the second half, but Fritz's slow-roller into the corner of the net was all that was needed as the defense pitched its second shutout of the year.
Faith gets a week to prepare for a rematch with Iowa Wesleyan College on Saturday, October 2, at 12:30 p.m. in Ankeny. The Tigers handed the Eagles their worst loss of the year two weeks ago with a 6-0 score.
