Surging Eagles Overwhelm Sabercats
WATERTOWN, Wisconsin—The Faith Eagles are surging at just the right time. The Sabercats of Maranatha were their latest prey as the Eagles (who have won five of their last six games) came away with a 91-68 win on the road to begin a busy week of basketball action as the conference and regional tournaments loom.
Two themes have been evident in the Eagles' recent surge: The continued spectacular play of Chris Barnette and solid contributions off the Eagles' bench. Both were on display on Tuesday as Barnette had one of his finest games of the season, pumping in 27 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists. Seth Freeman, Andy Hecker, Logan Fincham, and Josh Baucum provided the knockout punch off the bench with a combined 46 points, led by Freeman's 18 points in just 19 minutes.
It was a dominant performance from start to finish for the Eagles, whose largest deficit was just one point early in the first half and largest lead was 28 early in the second half. Faith hustled for 21 second-chance points and forced Maranatha into 16 turnovers in the win. Andy Hecker's athleticism off the bench was a difference-maker especially as he contributed 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks, consistently making positive impacts in his 21 minutes of action.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 12-10 overall. Their 80.7 points per game scoring average is just outside of the top ten in NCCAA Division II. The Eagles migrate south this weekend for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. tip at Central Christian College of the Bible on Friday, and a 2 p.m. tip at Spurgeon College on Saturday. Conference tournament action begins next week in Haviland, Kansas.
