Streak Snapped
The Eagle men battled visiting Ozark Christian College this past Saturday in a battle of NCCAA II Top Ten and MCC conference leaders. Faith was fighting to keep their undefeated season alive while Ozark was seeking sole possession of first place in the Midwest Christian College Conference. In an exciting match which featured agressive attacking from both sides, it took over 100 minutes to determine a winner, as Ozark was able to escape with a 3-2 double overtime victory. Faith is now 7-1-0 on the year and 2-1-0 in the conference.
The game featured two evenly matched teams, with Ozark's quick attacked balanced out with Faith's focus on possession and build up to scoring chances. Early on Ozark earned a pk on a tackle that came just to late from the Eagle defense. Keeper David Levy guessed right but the ball sailed just over his outstretched arms to give Ozark an early 1-0 lead. That lead held for the rest of the half, as both teams had multiple opportunities to score, but neither able to finish off chances. Already down starter Nick Paine due to illness, Faith suffered an injury to midfielder Marcus Wilkes on a foul from behind, putting Faith without two starters for the rest of the game.
Faith was finally able to break through early in the second half. After earning a corner kick, Joseph Frerichs placed a perfeclty time ball into the top of the 18 which Andrew Young headed into the goal to pull Faith even at one apiece. The game then took on a familiar form, with Ozark using their speed up front to try to catch the Eagles in transition, while Faith used possession to earn several scoring opportunities of their own. Faith was finally able to crack the scoring gridlock in the 77' minute, as Alec Hraba, in for the injured Wilkes, scored off a cross from Chase Clark to give Faith the lead with 18 minutes to play. Ozark began to press, and Faith failed to mark a man on defense seven minutes later which Ozark capitalized on to score with just over five minutes to play. A minute and a half later, Clark found himself facing a charging keeper and chipped the ball over the keeper's head, but the ball didn't quite bend enough, hitting the post and keeping the Eagles from a regulation winning goal.
In the first overtime, both teams had chances but neither could score. Early in the second overtime, Ozark caught Faith slow to get back in transition and capitalized as they had 17 minutes earlier to tie the score, this time earning the game winner to hand the Eagles their first defeat.
In a game which featured 58 shots overall, it was Ozark who outshot Faith 33-25. Faith recorded 13 saves to Ozark's five. Faith returns to MCCC action at home on Tuesday, September 29, when they will host Emmaus Bible College. That game is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 PM.
