The Faith volleyball team found out there is life when down 2-0 in a match this past Tuesday when they were playing a Union College team which had defeated them twice last year in 5th sets. The Eagles dug an early hole against the Warriors with a season low hitting percentage and poor defensive play. "I think our upperclassmen needed to get past the fact we had not defeated Union at their place for two years. This is one of those places we have struggled to play well, so I am thankful they found a way to win tonight," noted coach Lanny Nihart.
Faith lost the first two sets 25-13 and 25-20 hitting a negative .04 while recording only one block. Union continued to score on roll shots and tipping forcing the Eagles into defensive adjustments. In set three Faith found their offensive attack winning 25-16 with a 14% attack led by Julia Bray's five kills. Set four found Faith out to early eight and nine point leads winning 25-15 and providing momentum into the final decisive 5th set. Behind the serving of junior Natalie Bunjer (three serving aces) the Eagles jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead. Making the mandatory switch at eight points Faith held an 8-3 lead. Leading 13-9 the Eagles closed the match with a kill and Union turnover.
With the win the Eagles move above .500 at 7-6 and will host MCCC foe Barclay College on Friday night. The Eagles will then travel Saturday morning to Forest City, Iowa to face Waldorf College and Haskell College. "We did a good job of finding our intensity. We are on a small winning streak of four out of our last five matches and need to keep that going. We have a tough conference match Friday and very difficult road games, but right now our team wants to play and that is a good sign," noted Nihart.
