The Faith Baptist Bible College women's basketball team travelled to Joplin, MO last week to play in the MCC Conference Tournament. Faith went into the tournament as the #5 seed. On Thursday, the Lady Eagles played #4 seeded Calvary Bible College who they had just lost to Calvary the previous Saturday in overtime. The Lady Eagles played some of their best basketball on the year this game. Faith shot 43% during the game which is well above their 30% average and Faith was up 30-17 at halftime. Not only was Faith shooting well, their defense was very strong. Faith was able to maintain their double digit lead and win the game 58-47. Faith had four players score in double digits as Jenna Bean had 16 points, Becca Saatmann added 13, Shelby Whitcomb scored 11 points, and Ashley Pearson scored 10 points. Kelsey Grider and Ashley Pearson led the team in rebounds with nine each. Jenna Bean led the team in steals with six.
With the Thursday win, Faith moved on to play the #1 seeded team in the conference Manhattan Christian College. Manhattan is also ranked #2 overall in the NCCAA D2. Faith was able to score first on a Becca Saatmann free throw. Not much else happened in Faith's favor after that. Manhattan showed why they are ranked that high as Faith not only couldn't defend them, they couldn't score on them either. Faith lost the game 15-78. Becca Saatman led Faith in scoring and rebounding with seven points, and eight rebounds.
With Friday's loss, Faith moved into the consolation third and fourth place game vs. #3 seeded Barclay College. Faith was able to hang with Barclay for the first half as the score was tied at 22-22. Faith's 1-3-1 defense was able to contain the outside shooting of Barclay for the first half, as well as the first 10 minutes of the second half as Faith was only down by four points with 10 minutes to go. Barclay started to hit their outside shots on the reversal passes, and Faith had run out of steam in their third game in three days. Barclay hit five three pointers down the stretch that Faith was unable to match and Faith 34-52. Faith was led in scoring and rebounding by Kelsey Grider with 14 points and nine rebounds. Becca Saatmann had 11 points and eight rebounds. Shelby Whitcomb led the team in assists with four. Jenna Bean set a new school record for career steals in the loss. "I was very proud of our team during this tournament. We started as the #5 seed, and finished in fourth place. I saw much improvement from many of the Lady Eagles this weekend. I am also very happy for Jenna as she has had a rough year with her knee injury, but has continued to play hard and through pain, and it has paid off for her. This is a great accomplishment, and I am proud to have had the opportunity to watch her get that many steals," said Coach Rosekopf.
Faith will finish off the season at the NCCAA D2 North Central Regional Tournament. Faith will be the fourth seed of the tournament playing the #1 seed of the tournament Trinity Bible College. Trinity is also ranked #6 overall in the NCCAA D2. Faith will look to improve and do better than the last time they played Trinity. That game was played in North Dakota, and Faith lost 42-70. This game will be played on Friday, February 22, in Minneapolis, MN. The game will tip off at 2:00 PM.
