Strong Start to Eagles Track Season
The Eagles track team had a strong start to the season as they traveled to Storm Lake, IA for the Beaver Relays Saturday, April 6, 2013. Event winners included freshman Kevin England in the 5,000m with a winning and school record time of 18:09.81, and freshman Elizabeth Hemsworth who also set a school record as she won the 400m dash by nearly four seconds and qualified for the NCCAA nation meet with a time of 60.86 seconds. Hemsworth took fourth in the 200m dash and fifth in the 100m dash, while England placed fifth in the 1,500m. Sophomore Copper Rodman took sixth in the 1,500m and eighth in the 400m dash. Freshman 800m runner Hannah Nichols, 5,000m specialist Jonathan Dupea, and 100m sprinter Derek Wilcox competed well in their first career competitive races as Dupea finished second, Nichols sixth, and Wilcox tenth.
Two Eagles qualified for this weekend's Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, IA. Elizabeth Hemsworth and Derek Wilcox will go head-to-head against NCAA Division 1 athletes. Wilcox will compete in the 100m dash at 2:00pm and Hemsworth will run the 400m dash at 1:00pm where she has the potential to be a top ten finisher despite the high level of competition. She will also be competing in the 100m dash at 1:45pm.
